J.R. is always looking for ways to get ahead at the expense of his family members, and in this episode, he sets his sights on sabotaging Bobby’s refinery deal. He goes so far as to plant false information in the mind of a potential buyer to scuttle the deal. J.R.’s actions illustrate the cutthroat nature of the Ewings and the lengths they’re willing to go to in order to maintain their power and influence.
Bobby is devastated when he learns of J.R.’s sabotage. He’s put everything he has into the refinery deal, and now it looks like it’s all for nothing. The tension between Bobby and J.R. reaches a boiling point, with Bobby accusing J.R. of betraying their family and their business. This scene is a powerful example of the power struggles at play in Dallas, where family loyalty is always in question.
